Welcome to Brendan Lawless Furniture
Brendan Lawless designs and creates off-standard furniture, cabinets and joinery for the home and business. Pride of place among his traditional designs is the Boat Builders Chair.
Based on a 1830’s design, the Boat-Builder’s chair is hand-made using traditional techniques. The ribs are steam-bent, a technique still used by boat-builders to add strength to wood.
The Chairs are made to order in a variety of woods including beech, red oak, ash, or can be painted any colour. Alternatively they are also available with a distressed finish.
Boat Builders Chair
The Irish Boat Builders Chair is a traditional design dating back to the 1830’s and incorporates old methods used by boat builders that still hold true today.
The legs are hand turned using a lathe and the curved rails are handmade and formed with steam-bending, a traditional technique used by boat-builders.
The boat-chair follows a tradition of simplicity and functionality. It’s made using native timbers like oak, elm and ash all of which feature strongly in Irish pieces.

BáidínThe Baidin (little boat) brings two Boat Builders chairs together to create a unique baby-basket stand. The chairs, when together, are firmly secured using a distinctive wooden locking system, concealed underneath. This stunning piece, as original and inspiring as its precious cargo, can in time, be effortlessly restored to both its elements. When separate, the lock is safely tucked away beneath the chair, out of sight until needed. We’ve used Mothercare’s Snug Moses basket for display purposes only.
